Children At Risk Project

“Bringing hope and a bright future to children by breaking the poverty cycle through education.”

Children at Risk (C@R) is New Life Foundation’s sponsorship program reaching impoverished children and families throughout Cambodia. Many village children have only one parent or are orphaned.  These children grow up in extremely poor conditions as their families struggle to live day to day. Many at-risk children do not attend school because, in order to survive, they must labor in the rice fields with their families. Children who do not receive an education, cannot break free from the cycle of poverty Working closely with village pastors, C@R brings these at-risk children hope and a bright future. The C@R program provides school supplies for the children to go to school, as well as basic food for the family.  With this help, the family is able to release their children from laboring in the fields, and allow them to continue their education. Through this simple sponsorship program we have seen families set free from that cycle.
The monthly sponsorship per child is USD$35 (or USD$420 per annum). We would urge donors to commit to a period of 3 years but if you are unable to do so, a one-year commitment still helps. Our goal is to increase the number of sponsored children from 150 to 200.

Overview

New Life Foundation (NLF) is a Christian not-for-profit organization spearheading sustainable humanitarian work for the benefit of all in the community working hand-in-hand with the local church. NLF was formed in 1994. We specialize in providing foundational opportunities for Cambodians that are catalysts for a great future for every individual and family, regardless of their background. These opportunities primarily consist of training in language and life skills, livelihood, and leadership skills.

New Life Foundation partners with Cambodia’s Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports through several projects including our Language & Life Skills, Leadership and Livelihood Training, our Children@ Risk program, and Patient Care Ministry. Over 25,000 people have been equipped through New Life Foundation’s various initiatives since its inception in 1994.

The Children at Risk (C@R) Program is one of the projects of New Life Foundation which is a sponsorship program reaching impoverished children and families throughout Cambodia. Many village children have only one parent or are orphaned, and they do not attend school because they must labor in the rice fields with their families to survive. Our vision and goal at C@R are to bring these at-risk children hope and a bright future, and our mission is to work closely with pastors in the villages to choose the neediest children to take part in our sponsorship program. The C@R program provides school supplies for the child to  go  to school, as well as basic food for the family. With this help, the family can release their children from laboring in the fields and allow the children to attend school. Children who do not receive an education, cannot break free from the cycle of poverty, but we have seen this simple sponsorship program set families free from that cycle.

The sponsorship program consists of a monthly cost of USD35 per child or USD420 per year to cover school expenses, rice, and other supplies for their families. We would request that the sponsorship period is for 3 years, totaling USD 1260. In addition, we are aiming to run “Parent Seminars” to educate the parents of our sponsored children about the value of education and  provide us with  a further opportunity of  sharing the gospel. The  costs per seminar (for up to 30 children and their parents/guardians) is approx. $150.

New Life Foundation is seeking partners who will partner with us in having a long-term, multi-generational impact on hundreds of young adults through this sponsorship program.

Vision, Goals And Missions

The vision of the project is to bring hope and a bright future by breaking the poverty cycle through Education and Jesus – by providing sponsorship to poor families in the provinces to enable their children to attend the local government school; providing an opportunity for the local church to minister to these families; and to be a witness of God’s love to families who do not know Christ.

The goals of the project are to provide sponsorship to 150 children to pursue higher education, expectedly finishing Grade 12 in High School, and to bring the Gospel and make disciples with these sponsorship children and families through the program.

The missions of the project are to work closely with the provincial pastors to reach out to these poor children and families by sending funds to provincial pastors to purchase rice and ingredients, thus they can look after the physical and spiritual health of the children and their families by visiting and following up on them upon a regular basis.

Selection Criterion

The selection of children and families consists of this main criterion –

  • Only one child per family
  • Children of poor provincial pastors: We feel it is important to look after our poor local village pastors by supporting them to keep their children in school
  • Poor children in the provinces are willing to study hard with supportive parents: We provide sponsorship to poor children who are committed and who have supportive parents.
  • Children from Grades 1-12 in government schools: As funds are limited, we only provide sponsorship for a  child to attend the local government school  –  and not vocational training or private schooling.  We aim to support a  child to finish their  High  School qualification.
